- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- Pour boiling water over chopped dates and stir in baking soda. Let sit 10 minutes.
- Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.
- Fold in flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in softened date mixture.
- Bake 30–35 minutes until set.
- Prepare toffee sauce by simmering all sauce ingredients until thick.
- Pour half the sauce over pudding and serve warm with remaining sauce.

Best served warm with custard, cream, or vanilla ice cream.
