- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch cake pan.
- Toss sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
- Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices.
- Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk into batter.
- Spread batter into pan and top with apples.
- Add crumb topping if using.
- Bake 45–55 minutes until golden and set.
- Cool slightly before serving.
