Ingredients
  

Apple Filling
  • 3 apples peeled, cored, sliced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
Cake Batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs large
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.75 cup milk
Crumb Topping (Optional)
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch cake pan.
  2. Toss sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  4. Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
  5. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk into batter.
  7. Spread batter into pan and top with apples.
  8. Add crumb topping if using.
  9. Bake 45–55 minutes until golden and set.
  10. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Best served slightly warm with vanilla ice cream or caramel drizzle.
