- Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan.
- Whisk egg yolks with some milk separately.
- Heat remaining milk and cream, temper eggs, and combine.
- Cook until thick, then stir in butter and vanilla.
- Layer wafers, bananas, and custard in a dish.
- Repeat layers and finish with custard.
- Whip cream with sugar and vanilla, spread on top.
- Chill at least 4 hours before serving.
