Old-Fashioned Homemade Banana Pudding from Scratch

Ingredients
  

Custard
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup cornstarch
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 4 egg yolks large
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
Layers
  • 5 bananas sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers 11 oz
Topping
  • 1.5 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

Method
 

  1. Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan.
  2. Whisk egg yolks with some milk separately.
  3. Heat remaining milk and cream, temper eggs, and combine.
  4. Cook until thick, then stir in butter and vanilla.
  5. Layer wafers, bananas, and custard in a dish.
  6. Repeat layers and finish with custard.
  7. Whip cream with sugar and vanilla, spread on top.
  8. Chill at least 4 hours before serving.

Notes

Best made a day ahead for ideal texture.
