Tennessee Onions

A classic Southern baked onion casserole made with sweet onions, butter, and melted cheeses until golden and bubbly.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 large sweet onions thinly sliced
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter sliced
  • 1.5 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.75 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground

Equipment

  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Aluminum foil

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the sliced onions in the dish and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Top with half the butter and half the shredded cheeses.
  4. Repeat layers with remaining onions, seasoning, butter, and cheese.
  5. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Uncover and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  7. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use sweet onions for best flavor. Can be assembled ahead of time and baked before serving.
